Legend has it, St Nicholas of Myra was traveling when he was told of a poor merchant concerned about the future wellbeing of his three daughters as he was unable to afford the dowries to marry them off. Aware the merchant would be too proud to accept charity, St Nick rode past their house in the middle of the night, throwing three bags of gold coins down their chimney. The merchant and his daughters awoke the next morning to find the coins had been caught in the stockings they’d hung up to dry along the hearth.
